Spring Steel – Plate Laser Cutting

Order story: restoring typography equipment parts from spring steel

This winter, a printing company approached us with a very specific but complex problem. Their large-scale book cover drawing machine had stopped – the reason? A small but critically important part that regularly broke and paralyzed the entire production line for several hours.

The client gave us two things:

• broken original parts
• its previously made copy

It was clear from the first inspection that the root of the problem was the material. The part was made of ordinary sheet steel, which easily deformed and broke under intense load. We even tried making a prototype from 2 mm steel (instead of the original 1.5 mm), but the result was identical – the material could not withstand the dynamic load, and we did not want to risk repeated machine shutdowns.

The solution – stronger material and precise copying.

After analysis, we came to the conclusion that a completely different material was needed – one that retains its shape, withstands repeated bending, and does not break.

Ideal candidate: spring steel 1.1274 1.5 mm thick.

• The material was ordered from a reliable supplier in Germany
• We created an accurate 1:1 part design, combining the original and copy geometry
• We perform high-precision laser cutting and post-processing

Result

The final parts turned out to be not only durable and with the correct mechanical properties, but also significantly cheaper than the spare part offered by the manufacturer. The client received a reliable solution that prevents costly downtime and extends the equipment's service life.
